Discovered “new world”: Earth received signals

61

An international team of astronomers has discovered new alien world, a rare exoplanet that joins 233, confirmed by a survey conducted by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The mission of TESS is to observe and study hundreds of thousands of the brightest stars closest to the Sun, identifying what could potentially be a transiting exoplanet. One of the latter was cataloged with the name TOI-2196 b and it is one of the rarest and most special ever seen.

Rare exoplanet discovered

Use of the Transiting Exoplanet Exploration Satellite (TESS) from NASA, a research group dedicated to observing, discovering and eventually cataloging new exoplanets, led by Prof. Karina M. Persson of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, published the groundbreaking discovery on arXiv.org (August 11, 2022). They were able to register transit signalidentified in the light curve of the G-type star known as TOI-2196.

By measuring the subsequent radial velocity Using the High Accuracy Radial Speed Planet Searcher (HARPS) spectrograph installed on the ESO telescope in Chile, the team’s astronomers realized that the values were consistent with those of the planet. TOI-2196 b (as it was eventually called) is an exoplanet of the type hot subneptunea real rarity among the hundreds of similar celestial bodies observed and discovered so far.

The study defines TOI-2196b as “a rich, hot, and unstable planet.” smaller than Neptune but with a bulk density of more than 50% of it. The astronomers also compared the results with our planet, finding that the rarely seen hot sub-Neptune is about 3.5 times larger than Earth and 26 times more massive this. His revolves around a star the size of the sun it is short-term (about 1.2 days), which determines the equilibrium temperature, which reaches almost 2 thousand degrees Kelvin.

What is an exoplanet

To understand the importance of such a discovery and why NASA is working so hard, using the precious resources it has to search for new exoplanets, correctly answer the main question: what is an exoplanet? Most often we use the term “planet”, referring to our world and all other planets of the solar system, of which the Earth is a part. Technically a planet celestial body revolving around a star (Sun in case of Earth) and answers the gods very specific criteria: it must not be large enough to cause thermonuclear reactions (otherwise it would be a star), it must have a gravitational force that gives it a spherical shape, and, finally, it must “cleanse” the surroundings of all objects in its orbit.

I think that already in the sixteenth century Giordano Bruno put forward the theory of the existence of exoplanets, that is, planets outside the solar system, then Newton picked up this theory, but only in the twentieth century were the first celestial bodies of this type identified and cataloged. And the most amazing thing is that, according to the latest NASA research, many exoplanets have characteristics that make them similar to the Earth, therefore potentially habitable.
