At the United Nations, Turkey is now officially referred to as “Türkiye”. As the country has been called in Turkish since independence in 1923. The change came immediately after Anakara’s request, a UN spokesman said.
The English translation of the name of the country has long been contradictory in Turkey – partly because the English “turkey” can also mean “turkey”.

Therefore, the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has formally asked the United Nations and other international organizations to use the name “Turkiye” in the future. At the end of last year, Turkey decided to use the designation “Made in Türkiye” for export products. Erdogan argued that this term best expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation.
State broadcaster TRT wrote: “Enter” Turkey “into Google and you will get an intricate set of images, articles and dictionary definitions linking the country to … a large bird native to North America.”
